Your drywall contractor checklist, item by item

Q: Which licenses and permits should I expect for a drywall contractor?

A: Good to meet you, think of this as a trail map for your drywall contractor. Not every marker applies to every traveler, so we check which ones are on your path.

    1. Business license: A business license for a drywall business MAY ask whether you hang, tape or finish drywall, the number of workers and vehicles, and the size of jobs you accept.
    2. Sales tax permit: A sales tax permit MAY be needed because drywall sheets and supplies are taxable goods, and how tax applies to installation depends on how the contract is written.
    3. Contractor license: Hanging and finishing drywall may require a contractor license once jobs pass a certain size.
    4. Dust and silica safety rules: Sanding and cutting may require dust controls and protective equipment for workers.
    5. Surety bond: A bond may be required to protect customers if a job is left unfinished.
    6. Proof of liability insurance: Coverage for water, dust or wall damage at customers' homes is commonly requested, along with workers' coverage.
    7. Company papers: A DBA, an LLC or a tax ID number MAY make sense for your drywall contractor, and we prepare all of these documents on this site, so everything can be ordered in one place.

One service fee covers more than one license. If you order a business license and it turns out you also need another one, for example a home occupation permit, we obtain both for the service fee of the business license. Annual tax and application fees charged by the govt are not part of our service fee: we find the applications and fill them out for you.

The upside, with all five senses

Construction and repairs never stop, and a clean crew with sharp finishing skill stays busy.

    A small scene

Picture Humphrey smoothing the last seam for Plumb & Plaster Drywall, white dust on his cap and the license folded in the truck cab.

    A cautionary example

A ceiling panel falls and injures a homeowner, so an LLC keeps the claim from reaching your home.

    The numbers behind it

Business code (NAICS): 238310 (Drywall and Insulation Contractors). This page lists 7 paperwork items for a drywall contractor, and each one is marked as something you MAY need, since we confirm which apply.

Tip: Wear a respirator while sanding and clean up dust at the end of every day.

A wall is flat only until you turn on a flashlight.

Ready when you are: start your order and we will find out what applies to your drywall contractor, fill out the applications and keep the paperwork moving.

Before the doors open: a drywall contractor and its paperwork

Q: What licenses and permits might I need to start a drywall contractor?

A: Here is the paperwork map for your drywall contractor. Every item says MAY, because what applies depends on how the business is set up, and sorting that out is our job. It also lists the personal license or trade license of the person doing the work, because a business license alone does not cover that.

1. Business license: A business license for a drywall business MAY ask whether you hang, tape or finish drywall, the number of workers and vehicles, and the size of jobs you accept.
2. Home occupation permit: A home occupation permit MAY apply when tools and a work truck are kept at home, with limits on stored sheets, parked trucks and dust.
3. Sales tax permit: A sales tax permit MAY be needed because drywall sheets and supplies are taxable goods, and how tax applies to installation depends on how the contract is written.
4. Professional or trade license: Drywall finisher journeyman card: Experienced installers may hold a personal journeyman credential from apprenticeship training in hanging, taping and finishing wallboard.
5. Contractor license: Hanging and finishing drywall may require a contractor license once jobs pass a certain size.
6. Dust and silica safety rules: Sanding and cutting may require dust controls and protective equipment for workers.
7. Surety bond: A bond may be required to protect customers if a job is left unfinished.
8. Proof of liability insurance: Coverage for water, dust or wall damage at customers' homes is commonly requested, along with workers' coverage.
9. Company papers: Depending on how you want to own and name the business, an LLC, a DBA or a tax ID number may come next; we prepare those too.

Our service fee stays put. A business license order that also needs a home occupation permit or another permit still carries one service fee for us. What we do not cover are the upfront annual tax or application fees the govt charges; we find those applications and fill them out.

My friends and I want to open a boutique selling wholesale clothing from home. Once I have all the licenses, how soon can I start selling, and can I set any price I want?
10/15/2026 12:00 AM

You can start selling the moment the paperwork is approved, and the price is entirely yours: you decide your own markup, and tax is added at the register.

The set to start with is a business license, a sales tax permit, a resale certificate for your wholesalers, a DBA for the boutique name and, if your living room is the showroom, a home occupation permit. Several partners together are best placed in an LLC.

If you order a business license and it turns out you also need another one, such as a home occupation permit, we obtain both for the service fee of the business license. The govt's annual tax and application fees are separate and not included; we find the applications and fill them out for you.

What is the first step to create a general contracting business? I also provide telehealth consulting and help clients select technology from different vendors.
10/15/2026 12:00 AM

The first step is the company: form an LLC, then get the business license and the EIN. A general contractor license MAY be required for construction work, so we confirm whether your jobs are large enough to need it.

Your consulting is a separate line. Helping clients pick technology usually needs only the business license, but clinical services would need a professional license, so keep them apart. A seller's permit is needed if you resell equipment.
